World number 1, Simona Halep ended the tournament of Roland Garros in triumph, winning in the final with 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 against US player Sloane Stephens.
After other two finals lost in Roland Gaross in 2014 and 2017, as well as a final lost at the Australian Open in 2018, Simona Halep managed to win her first Grand Slam title of her career.
It’s been 40 years since Virginia Ruzici, the manager of Simona Halep, won the Roland Garros trophy in 1978, in both women’s single and double.
The Roland Garros tournament has been previously won by other Romanians, too: Ilie Năstase in 1973, and also Ilie Năstase and Ion Ţiriac, men double, in 1970.
In her speech at the award ceremony, Simona Halep said “It was hard to talk after losing the final last year, but now it’s a good time to hold this speech. I’ve been dreaming of winning this title since I was 14 years old. It was a sensational athmosphere, I really wanted to get this title here, in France. I want to congratulate Sloane. You’ve done great after the injury, I wish you a lot of success and I’m sure you’ll be playing many finals from now on. Thanks to Darren, thank to my family. I thank the Romanians, but also the French. I felt your support during these two weeks. It is very nice that I won here 40 years after Virginia Ruzici succeeded in doing so. This playground is my favorite, I feel great here, see you all again next year.”
Congratulations Simona!
